The last Chogyal (king) of Sikkim was Palden Thondup Namgyal. He ruled Sikkim from 1963 until 1975 when the monarchy was abolished, and Sikkim became a part of India. The Chogyal’s reign faced political turbulence, and the merger with India marked the end of the monarchy in Sikkim. After the merger, Palden Thondup Namgyal lived a relatively private life until his death in 1982.
