The first king, or Chogyal, of Sikkim was Phuntsog Namgyal. He was consecrated as the first ruler of Sikkim in 1642. The consecration ceremony took place at Norbugang Chorten in Yuksom, marking the beginning of the Namgyal dynasty in Sikkim. Yuksom, where this historic event occurred, is considered the first capital of Sikkim. Phuntsog Namgyal’s reign is significant in the early history of Sikkim and the establishment of its monarchy.
