The shift of the capital from Tumlong to Gangtok in Sikkim was initiated by Chogyal Tashi Namgyal. Tashi Namgyal was the Chogyal (monarch) of Sikkim from 1914 to 1963. The decision to move the capital to Gangtok was made during his reign.
The shift to Gangtok was part of an effort to establish a more centrally located and easily accessible capital. Gangtok’s location, nestled in the eastern Himalayan range, offered several advantages, including better connectivity and a more temperate climate. The move to Gangtok also aimed to facilitate administrative functions and promote overall development in the region.
Gangtok has since grown to become the capital and the largest town in Sikkim, playing a central role in the state’s governance, commerce, and tourism.
